I Read Books: Fairy and Folk Tales of the Irish Peasantry by W B Yeats
Fairy and Folk Tales of the Irish Peasantry by W B Yeats
A very mixed bag this, as might be expected from a collection of folk tales. By compiling these from various sources we find some written very much in colloquial dialect, with eccentric spelling, others in clear Victorian English. Similarly the tales, some myths and legends from Ireland’s great heroes, some songs, a few extended jokes, some classic stories and some weird ones. And of variable quality.
There are better collections, but as a grab bag of Victorian collected stories, and also for any Yeats fans or completists out there, it’s got some stuff of interest. And the introduction led me down the rabbit hole of English Fairies (probably not) being Catholics.
Read This: For an eccentric collection of Irish folk tales
Don’t Read This: If strange old stories are just annoying.
Out Of Copyright: And free to read online.
