Pretty In Pink
Andie Walsh (Molly Ringwald) lives in a Chicago suburb, is a high school senior, her father is unemployed, she makes stylish clothes from old clothes, works in a record shop. Her best friend is Duckie (Jon Cryer); the two get bullied by richer kids but Duckie continues to be wacky and mock people. He’s in love with Andie but says nothing, just hangs around outside the club she goes to with Iona (Annie Potts) the cool older owner of the record shop.
Blane (Andrew McCarthy) one of the richer kids falls for Andie, asks her on a date. Duckie tries to intervene, so does Steff Mckee (James Spader) the boyfriend of Benny (Kate Vernon) Andie’s greatest rival/bully. They go anyway, though things get complicated as more and more obstacles are put in their way.
This is an 80s teen romance, with some better performances than most (a stacked cast of what would become notable actors) and some views of class and high school and the future after. Still, if you’re not into the drama of Andie and Blane or Duckie’s antics, there’s not much here.
