I Read Stories: The Hunting Of The Phoenix By S L Harris

The Hunting Of The Phoenix by S L Harris in Kaleidotrope

Rufus, the Captain Of The Guard has returned and the city is in flames. The former Princeps sent him to the Felicitous Land (a terrible barren waste) to bring back the phoenix, so he could taste the rarest meat in the world. The Captain Of The Guard was loyal, but also a figure of authority and so a threat to the Princeps power. With him he sent a scholar to guide them and Alexander the Princeps’ idiot cousin, another possible rallying point for opposition.

Rufus plans to desert rather than attempt this fatal mission. But it turns out Alexander is not so foolish as he seems. The guards are not from his company, but from the family estate. And Alexander has a plan, a vision, and he gathers followers on the hunt for the phoenix.

The phoenix can only be found when all hope is lost. And for all his ruthless cynicism, Rufus has not lost all hope – yet.
