I Read Stories: Pop by M C Schmidt

Pop by M C Schmidt in Roi Fainéant

Something odd is going on. Our narrator’s father, a retired lawyer, is suddenly drinking beer and lamenting his wife, dog and truck. His own wife is deeply in love with him, and when he has to go out declares she will love him forever when he dies. His daughter is mooning over the boy next door. They all claim to hear music that he can’t hear.

He goes out to look for a carbon monoxide alarm, but the staff at the store aren’t interested, one in love, the other knowing that nothing matters. He catches up with his friend, who seems fine, but his boy is nostalgic for the past, though he’s only nine years old.

They meet someone who is also immune who has a theory. Pop music, it has overwhelmed people. But these three men have not been taken over by their favourite songs. Is there a reason why? And if so a cure?
