I Read Stories: Last Train From Deadwall by André Geleynse
Last Train From Deadwall by André Geleynse in Beneath Ceaseless Skies
Knucklebone was working for the Cogsmith Railroad Company when they died so they had the right to resurrect them as a skeleton, run by a diesel engine and small, all-but-indestructible aether chamber. That chamber is what keeps them undead and moving. The railroad company charged them for the resurrection, charged them again when it became clear they couldn’t pay off the debt and tried and failed to kill themselves.
On the way to Deadwall, where the Clockmaker’s undead forces hold back the Mothlord, a train breaks down. It’s built of dinosaur bones. Knucklebone has a way with them, convinces to go on. Lies to it. Because in Deadwall are the records that may hold the clues to ending their existence.
The Deadwall is the heart of the Clockmaker’s power. The place where life and death meet. It’s also the fortified boundary with the Mothlord. And Knucklebone is only one of the beings wishing to make changes.
