I Read Stories: Cold Iron Clockwork by Derrick Boden

Cold Iron Clockwork by Derek Boden in Trollbreath

Alistair Faeries gets up early. He has the machines to run. He has the Willowwisper, to release wisps into the forest. Cornflower used to do this until she asked him to make a machine so she could spend her time playing harp by the mirror pool. The Gossamer Engine, whose work used to be done by Darius. All the other machines, that do the work the faeries used to.

Yet the faeries are dissatisfied, wanting machines to comb their hair, to pluck their harp. So Alistair builds yet more, and now, at last, the most important of all. The Evensinger.

Their jobs are their function in the faeries' village. Replaced by machines, what is there to do now? Now Alistair is the only one with a job.
