Two Hands, Wrapped In Gold by S B Divya in Uncanny

Rampalalakshmicharan’s parents laid him at the feet of Vishnu and Lakshmi and asked for blessings. His hands turn things to gold.

This is more curse than blessing as they travel far from India, ending up in Bavaria. Where his father dies and they find themselves having to live off his mother’s weaving. Where he can’t work because his hands have to be bandaged with gold cloth and linen on top to keep the secret.

Where inevitably his life moves towards what could be, if viewed from outside, something like the fairytale of Rumpelstiltskin.

Don’t Read This: Complicating and inverting and making fairytales – with magic and strangeness intact – more grounded in time and place is not for you
