I Watch Films: The Invisible Man (2020)

The Invisible Man
(2020)

When your film is called The Invisible Man then long lingering shots of empty spaces can be quite threatening. Not that people being dragged on digitally removed ropes or fighting themselves isn’t good or necessary to make it work, but just sitting the camera on a room with nothing in works.

Anyway Cecilia Kass (Elisabeth Moss) leaves her abusive boyfriend, world-renowned optics expert Adrian Griffin. He’s smart, determined and resourceful so although she gets her sister Emily (Harriet Dyer, previously seen in The Inbetween) to help her she actually hides out with a cop James (Aldis Hodge, one of the team in blog favourite Leverage). Two weeks later Adrian commits suicide and his lawyer brother (Tom) delivers a message, also $5 million in installments.

The money is contingent on a number of things including her not committing a crime, and things start to go weird. The film does not linger on Cecilia figuring out what’s going on – it’s called The Invisible Man – but concentrates on isolating her by framing her for things (because the guy doing it is invisible).

Anyway things escalate and there’s a twist. Maybe even some ambiguity? Maybe not. It nicely marries CGI scares and action with psychological torment.

Watch This: Some spooks, some scares, some weird action, even some good acting
Don’t Watch This: For anything even resembling a surprise
