I Watch Films: Konga

Konga

Dr Decker returns from Uganda after crashing there and he has some wild new theories, some giant insectivorous plants and a baby chimpanzee called Konga. He returns to his research and his teaching. However he has two new plant extracts. One causes animals to grow, the other makes them obedient.

Obviously he uses the extracts to make Konga into a big gorilla monster and then kill everyone who gets in the way of his work, and also to clear the way to a romantic relationship with his student Sandra. This makes his assistant Margaret very jealous and leads to Konga becoming an even bigger gorilla monster and going on a rampage.

The film drags a little in the middle as Dr Decker keeps meeting new problems and then eliminates them with his gorilla assassin. As might be expected for 1961 the special effects are patchy, though some of the different size stuff at the start of the rampage is pretty good. However [SPOILERS] most of the viewpoint characters have been removed by the end, leaving us basically with the hapless police (who have been baffled by the violent murders which have left behind thick black animal hair) following a trail of destruction.

Watch This: For some tense, classic monster action
Don’t Watch This: If you’re hoping for a lot of monster rampage
Before You Watch The Trailer: As well as rampaging gorillas and meat eating plants there's also a scene of sexual assault
