The Richest Man In The Graveyard
…owns the graveyard and lives in a tower above it.
I mean I get it. People are difficult and complex and hard to deal with. When they’re alive. They’re much easier to get along with dead. They’re good neighbours.
He doesn’t even have to do the work. There are gravediggers (a surprisingly light-hearted pair, always arguing, never apart), there is the gardener, there is the woman who deals with the flowers. And the secretary, who arranges everything, times and dates, plots and stones and all the paperwork.
If you visit the graveyard you’ll often see him, walking quietly and discreetly on the paths. Graveyard, what a name. Gives the wrong impression, for this is no small garden of stones. It covers an enormous area, a veritable necropolis of tombs and plots. People have got lost in there. If that happens take a look for the tower and go there, then follow the main road. Don’t worry if it gets dark, he keeps a light on up there for anyone caught at night.
It is morbid, yes. To spend your days surrounded by the dead. But there’s another way of looking at it. Think of the dead, lying still in their graves, visited less and less as time grinds on. Here at least is one person who remains with, who thinks of them.
Or maybe it’s just to keep fortune seekers away, who knows. The richest man in the graveyard has his privacy and gets to live as he wishes. No greater riches perhaps.
