I Read Stories: The Gravedigger's Godling by Sophia Alapati

The Gravedigger’s Godling by Sophia Alapati in Crow And Cross Keys

Iona talks to the God of Abysses unknowing and becomes pregnant with a godling. This is known to happen in the village. And because they bring up the godlings until the age of ten, and then they go with their god-parent to fight in their wars, their powers protect the village.

Iona is the village gravedigger. Her neighbour Keeley had a daughter by the goddess of justice who never tired of pointing out unfairness until she left. Then one day Keeley knew she had died and sure enough Iona had to dig her grave in the corner reserved for the godlings.

She does not want the child but that is not her choice to make or anyone’s. So she has a son, Ciaran, who dwells in silences and solitude, who tends the graves of the godlings.

Who will have a choice of his own.
