A couple have a strange experience in a hotel where it appears there are people in their room; when investigated they have vanished. The husband looks into the paranormal, but then they forget it.

Two years later he’s given a promotion, sent to head up the company’s Botswana branch. (The wife is very ignorant, also racist about it). They pack up their flat, drink champagne with their neighbours from upstairs. When the neighbours leave they start to see strange Edwardian people in the flat, the whole thing sometimes being furnishes, sometimes not.

Something terrible happened here, and we’re pretty clear on what it was from the start. The increasing worry and panic of the couple from the present (1984) drive it forward, especially when they find themselves trapped in the past, then again when a policeman finds no trace of any problems. A fairly classic haunted house (flat) story.
