The Chosen One’s Choice by Jamie Lackey in Swords And Sorcery Magazine

When Ryo is born he has the mark of the chosen one over his eye. The occupiers of the country will kill him so he’s taken away to a monastery, to train and stay safe. His sister goes with him; because only men are in the monastery she takes the name Dev and lives as a boy.

Dev faces challenges. He has a rival who is envious because as the chosen one’s brother he’s special, gets a special room with his brother. He learns to fight, to protect the chosen one when he comes into his powers.

In the end the chosen one must reveal what he can do. And then choose what to do with that.
