I Read Books: Spore
Will is a teenager on a camping trip in the Mark Twain National Forest. His parents disappear and he injures himself. Hungry and desperate he eats mushrooms, hallucinates, also masturbates.
Simon and Mary are fungus researchers in the Mark Twain National Forest, living and working out an RV. They discover a fungus they nickname Lazarus. When disturbed it releases spores that have pheromones that are sexually arousing.
Their backer Justine want to make vast amounts of money from the sex-fungus. But when the spores are taken away they lose potency. The laboratory she had built is turned into a sex-camp for rich people. But strange things start to happen. Stranger than rich people coming to a forest to breath in spores from a sex-fungus. People vanish and the fungus, the fungus has its own story.
This is a short novel about fungus, sex, teenage life, dying, science, the imperatives of capitalism, and the terror when these intersect.
Read This: For a story about sex and death and fungus, and
you’re probably interested in at least one of those three things
Don’t Read This: Do not monetise the sex-fungus
Getting Hold Of This: I guess you need to contact Stuart Buck, possibly via his magazine, the Bear Creek Gazette
