I Read Stories: Soho Golem
The Soho Golem
Kim Newman’s 70s occult detective, Richard Jeperson, and his slightly more regular detective sidekick Fred Regent are on the trail of a weird murder in Soho. Of course the victim is a member of the infamously corrupt Obscene Publications Squad of the Met, and he worked out of an office above a strip club/pornography shop.
We are then treated to a whistlestop tour of 70s porn films, Soho strip shows and a ridiculous erotic novel based on Jeperson and Regent; as was often the case hinting at more lewdness than was actually on display. It’s quite funny though underneath it all we have various rich old men exploiting everyone they can get their hands on. Even (especially) the morality protestors have a dark side. It’s proper sleazy.
Oh and there’s an occult crime going on as well.
Read This: For an entertaining look at smut, crime and the 70s
Don’t Read This: If this kind of nostalgic titillation just makes you sad
