I Read Stories: Terror Above Icehenge by Malcolm T North

Terror Above Icehenge by Malcolm T North as part of the Chain Story Project

Oona, a former royal, Clegg, a mercenary, and Brodhi, a thief, are climbing the mountain pass to Icehenge. There the Drunthuli people are holding a religious festival. Things start to go wrong when their god, Rocander, appears. It’s a giant reptilian vulture and the priest is going to sacrifice a young girl to it. The three intervene and Oona, in an effort to protect the girl, is carried away by Rocander.

She’s taken to the mountaintop lair of Corydonus of the Amythest Skull, a sorcerer whose experiments require girls. He’s an evil wizard with a staff that can shock Oona, incapacitating her. She will require all her wits as well as her strength to escape – and some help on top of it.

This is adventure fiction in the classic pulp style, fast moving swords and sorcery. Lightly updated for the 21st century – if anything even faster moving, yet still atmospheric, not choosing to dwell on the some of the less tasteful things early pioneers seemed to like to do.

I pick on this as an example, not just because Malcolm is a sometimes correspondent, but also to highlight it as part of the Chain Story Project. This is a co-operative project in which authors provide a free story, sequentially, in a chain. Each one essentially stands alone, using the style and characters of the individual author though there are recurring elements. An old-school idea – authors co-operating to boost one another, updated for the internet age.
