Dead Dog Mans The Lighthouse by Max Franciscovich in Strange Horizons

“I am a dog in the shape of a person and I live in a lighthouse and fetch.” Washed up on the shore dog tries to do what Marvelie asked them, though they’re clumsy and don’t understand. They were a dog, and Marvelie resurrected them as a person.

Marvelie could not get a radio to work, but then dog found one. Checking to see if it worked dog calls someone, who hadn’t heard about the lighthouse. Something happened out in the world.

Dog has messed up, because they don’t understand, and they want to be good. Marvelie doesn’t treat them right and dog, dog doesn’t have to accept that. Even if Marvelie is their master.
