Heinrich von Schneemann leaned back in his seat and took a long drag from his cigarillo. “After that it was simple matter to recover the deeds to the silver mine from Fort Destino and get us back to civilisation. And here we are!”

Civilisation was a generous term to be applied to the dimly lit railway compartment, the oil lamp flickering wanly as the train rattled its way along the lonely Andean track. The sun was setting, so he took one last look out, carefully making sure that he did not stare downwards. It was at least half a mile to the bottom of the precipice.

Mrs Sanderson let out a gasp. Schneemann, fairly impressed with the tale of his own deeds, was still swift to understand that this was not an admiring response to his wit and daring. Her breath steamed in the cool air of the carriage. “I’m very grateful to you Mr von Schneemann. But I am afraid that the baby is coming.”

“Think nothing... er...” His face went pale and his red eyes looked everywhere but at her. He brought the map to mind; until the train climbed to the top of the pass, twenty long, slow miles ahead, there was no help to be had. “Are you sure Mrs Sanderson?”

She looked at him, the same way one might look at a child who has managed to get all their lessons wrong. “Quite sure Mr von Schneemann.”

The Convoluted Adventure of the Vengeful Yankee Financier is a comedy crime novel set in 1902. Although it is a standalone tale, many of the characters can be found in another of my novels The Inexplicable Affair of the Mesmerising Russian Nobleman which can also be found on the Amazon, the Smashwords and sundry other fine ebook stores.
