I Read Books: The Kingdom Beyond The Waves

Enormous-armed archaeologist-explorer Amelia Hersh, who had a brief cameo in The Court of the Air, is back. She’s on an expedition to find the legendary lost city of Camlantis, which ruled over a golden age of peace and prosperity until its slightly hypocritical pacifism was threatened by the Diesla-Khan and his black oil horde.

We leave the Kingdom of Jackals (by u-boat) to spend some time abroad in the jungles across the sea. There’s wild crab-men tribes, and also an heretic Steam-man kingdom, and the Greenmesh, a hivemind of plants and animals together, that turns out to be hiding one of the secrets of Camlantis.

And once they find the city, what plans does Hersh’s wealthy genius backer have for Camlantean knowledge? Does he plan to bring in a golden age? And if he does, what will it cost?
