I Read Books: The City of Silk and Steel

Books Read in 2018: The City of Silk and Steel by Mike, Linda and Louise Carey

The City of Silk and Steel is the story of a mythical city ruled by women. After a revolution in Bessa, which owes much to the tales of the Arabian Nights, the harem of the former Sultan is sent away; a change of plan leads to an order for the women to be massacred, but the tables are turned and they escape into the desert. After many adventures they return and create a new way of living.

It’s clever and witty, and occasionally a bit arch as it shifts from fairytale to thriller, to fantasy, to directly addressing the reader through the words of Rem who has been blessed/cursed with foresight.

Read This: For a modern bit of fairytale stuff.
Don’t Read This: If you don’t like fairytales, or you don’t like the fact that fairytales have gruesome and horrific parts.
Also: I briefly mention Mike Carey’s Felix Castor novels and his run on the Hellblazer comic in this post.
