I Read Stories: Shield Of The Glasslaw by Isobel Mackenzie

Shield Of The Glasslaw by Isobel Mackenzie in Sword And Sorcery Magazine

The Stone Queen has called and Mishai, daughter of the lord of Glasslaw has come. A great army has gathered. They hold a tournament; the Queen will choose her guard from the participants. And the winner will be granted a boon.

The Stone Queen has elf blood and an elf has come to see. He tells Mishai that she intends to lead the army across the mountains and conquer the whole world. Mishai has fought before. Protected the Glasslaw from raiders, to stop her people being killed, or robbed and looted, starved. The elf is not there for glory, or honour or wealth, only for the sake of the story.

But what is Mishai here for, the best sword of the Glasslaw. A warrior who fights to protect her people. Who might make it to the finals to the Queen’s Guard. Who might even win – what would she ask for? And can the Stone Queen give it?
